Since 1976 continued aerial spray of Endosulfan has led close to 9,000 deaths, and nearly 4,800 bed ridden patients with sever physical and mental deformities in State of Kerala alone, said National Alliance of People’s Movements (NAPM). But even then the government fails to listen to this. One wonders whose interests Indian government is protecting, asks NAPM

The fifth Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), which is to consider global ban on endosulfan, began in Geneva on Monday morning. The recommendation for ban on endosulfan will come up for discussion on Tuesday as per the tentative scheduled for the meeting. Initial reports from the conference indicate that India is working for a consensus in the Asia-Pacific group against the ban.

However, C. Jayakumar of Thanal, who is an observer to the convention, said in an email message from Geneva that this move might not succeed as there are countries who cannot agree to the same. “The African region is more or less talking about a common agreement of adding endosulfan to Annex A of the convention without exemptions. The same is the news from the Latin American and Caribbean Group (GRULAC).” The GRULAC is asking for financial resources to implement the ban, he added.

In the mad rush to promote unwanted GM crops, the world had forgotten how China had demonstrated an increase in rice production by 89 per cent (and a reduction a rice blast disease by 94 per cent) when farmers grew a mixture of rice varieties rather than follow the mundane and destructive monoculture.

This miracle was reported from Yunan province, and I still remember the report had donned the front page of New York Times. After several years, I am so delighted that Olivier de Schutter, UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food, has made a mention of this in an important report he submitted today.
